We now offer our students natural wooded trails, complete with dirt underfoot and logs to walk over and around, animal tracks to identify, and forest life to discover and respect. Connection paths made from tree cookies for the children to walk across, trees all around with rich canopies above, seedlings springing to life. Can you picture all of this in your mind? Now, add to that mental imagery acoustic sound that only such an environment can provide.
It is now that adventure calls to them. It is now where the thrill of learning and understanding is accomplished with relative ease. It is now that those impressions will last a lifetime! The children we serve will learn to care for the earth only by time outdoors, enjoying the wonders of all she offers. It is the children who will pick up where we left off.
Sensory exploration outdoors to feel, hear, see and be with God’s handiwork. Taking the idea of botany and zoology from our indoor environments and bringing that knowledge with us to the forest where the children can identify the layers of a forest, discover new life in the hole of a tree, and ever so carefully pay heed to the animal tracks before them. May they enjoy their roles as Earth Explorers now and for many years to come! Dr. Montessori often said, “The land is where our roots are. The children must be taught to feel and live in harmony with the earth.” We begin adding to that work now as Earth Day 2021 concludes and we continue our move forward on behalf of the children entrusted to our care.
